Hi Nutrition Pro,

April is a critical month in your exam preparation, whether you’re planning to sit for the June exam or getting ahead for December. So, let’s dive into your April prep note.

Master Your Micronutrients

In April, it’s crucial to focus on mastering your micronutrients. The CNS exam outline, particularly in domain three, highlights the importance of understanding these tiny but mighty nutrients. I recommend taking the time to really learn about micronutrients like the back of your hand. Use tools like flashcards or review decks on BrainScape or Quizlet.

In my live prep events, I’ve noticed that distinguishing between micronutrients, especially B vitamins, can be problematic. As you review, make sure to note these distinctions. The exam is multiple-choice, so having a clear understanding will help you identify deficiencies or specifics related to each nutrient effectively. I suggest creating lists of macro and micro minerals, along with your vitamins, and know them in detail. My personal study blueprint, “Strategies for Success Pro,” includes a template to help you with this.

Understand the Nutrition Care Process

The second focus for April is the nutrition care process, which you learn about in the scope of practice. Our prep note on Scope of Practice covers this in detail. For now, begin making sure you understand how to conduct a nutrition assessment, a core component outlined in domain four. Think through how you would start working with a client—from the initial discovery call to formulating a personal nutrition care plan.

What information do you need, and how can you use your foundational nutrition knowledge to optimize a client’s health? Consider their habits and how you can assist them in improving their health through tailored guidance.

Study, Rehearse, Practice, Repeat

Since March, we’ve discussed mastering nutrition fundamentals. Now, keep practicing this information through a pattern I suggest: study, rehearse, practice, repeat. Engage in active learning and establish a steady rhythm if you haven’t already. As June approaches, refine your study routine for maximum success.

To further reinforce your knowledge, consider developing your own quizzes or utilizing any available practice questions. I have a blog on my review of practicequiz.com, which proved to be very valuable to my exam preparation.

Developing Your Study Routine

April is your chance to truly develop and execute a study routine. As you become more familiar with your study style, solidify your routine. It’s also an excellent time to take a mile marker assessment to evaluate your understanding. You can do this by creating quizzes or leveraging study banks and old course materials aligned with your current studies or taking quizzes and assessments that may be in the back of your fundamental nutrition textbooks. I suggest making sure the material you quiz on is aligned with the current study outline for the year of the exam you are taking. For those testing at the time of the writing of this blog, 2024-2028 CNS Exam Content Outline.

April is the time to hone in on your micronutrient mastery, nutrition assessment skills, and establish an effective study routine that sets you up for success in May and beyond. Immerse yourself in the material, follow the “study, rehearse, practice, repeat” pattern.

Feel free to leave any questions in the comments section; I’m here to help. Wishing you all the best in your CNS exam preparation journey and beyond!

And remember, It’s Time to Prep Like you Mean IT!

Sincerely,

Zoie
